The brief/project
LDS were commissioned to carry out an extensive topographic survey of Taksim Square in Istanbul so that designs could be prepared to erect temporary big screens and fan zones for a major sporting event. The survey area totalled about 86,000 square metres covering a busy public square with access to tram services and underground rail, as well as areas of park, cafes and recreation. Full topographic detail was requested – all major site features, levels and contours, trees and vegetation, and all services
The solution
LDS sent a team of two surveyors to carry out this work. Due to the busyness of the area, much of the survey was carried out at night. Most of the data was collected via laser scanner in order to minimise the time needed on site, with control being supplied through a combination of total station and SX10 control scans. The team took five days to survey the area
The outcome
Following the completion of our site work the data was brought back to the office and processed ready for drawings to be produced. Our drawing team spent a week working on the plans. Having carried out the survey via scanner, our team had the ability to draw as much detail as required, as well as having the invaluable resource of the interactive scan viewer providing a complete photographic record to refer to. Once complete, the drawings were sent to our client, allowing them to design and plan for their event, ensuring that installations could be positioned in prime areas and all the behind-the-scenes facilities provided. The event was a great success and LDS were happy to have played their part in it
